9th/2nd Earl of Arundel, Baron of Oswestry and Clun. He was kni ghted with Edward, the King’s son, and many others, on May 22, 1 306. He was summoned to Parliament on November 9, 1306, as ear l of Arundel. He took part in the Scottish wars, and in 1316 h e was captain-general north of the Trent. For a long time he wa s in opposition to Edward II and was violent against Piers Gaves ton, who had beaten him in a tournament. In 1321, he changed si des and married his son Richard to the daughter of Hugh le Despe nser, being thereafter one of the few nobles who adhered to th e King. He was chief justiciar of North and South Wales in 132 3 and warden of the Welsh Marches in 1325. Captured in Shropshi re by John de Cherleton, of the Queen’s party, he was beheaded w ithout trial, and later attainted, with his lands and honors bei ng forfeit.
