1st Lord Audley of Stratton Audley. He obtained from his mother , soon after her husband’s death, a reversionary grant of Stratt on Audley, which had been her inheritance. He was in the Frenc h wars from 1294, and a prisoner in France on April 2, 1299. H e served in the Scottish wars from 1299 to 1302, and again in 13 13; he was in Gascony in 1304/05. He was justice of North Wale s in 1306, and governor of Montgomery Castle in 1309. He was su mmoned to Parliament from May 15, 1321, by writs directed Hugon i de Audele seniori, to distinguish him from his second son, Hug h de Audley junior, who had been so summoned in 1317. In 1321/2 2 he joined the insurrection of the earl of Lancaster but surren dered before the battle of Boroughbridge on March 16, 1321/22, a nd was confined in Wallingford Castle. He died probably while s till a prisoner.
