2nd/6th Earl of Hereford, 7th Earl of Essex. He was constable o f England. He succeeded his father on June 1, 1220, then cam e into possession of his lands and was confirmed earl of Herefor d. After the death of his maternal uncle, William de Mandeville , on April 28, 1228, he inherited the title of earl of Essex. W hen the barons divided their confederation, Humphrey sided wit h Simon de Montfort. In 1263 he was one of the important baron s who supported the King while his son was on the opposite side , and was one of the keepers of the City of London on October 9 , 1265. Humphrey was taken prisoner at the battle of Lewes. H e was chosen one of 12 arbitrators to bring peace between the ki ng and Simon. He died on the way to Kenilworth Castle in Warwic kshire for this purpose.
