1st Lord Ferrers of Chartley. Chartley is in Staffordshire. H e is designated “of Chartley, Staffordshire; Southoe and Keyston , Huntingdonshire; and Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire.” On Novembe r 21, 1293, the King took his homage and he had livery of the la nds which he inherited as heir to his grandmother, Margaret, cou ntess of Derby. He was the principal supporter of the earls o f Hereford and Norfolk in their quarrel with the King in 1297 . He was summoned to Parliament from February 6, 1298/99, to De cember 19, 1311, as “Johanni de Ferariis, Ferrariis, or Ferers, ” whereby he is held to have become lord Ferrers. About 1298 h e petitioned the Pope for a dispensation to permit him to borro w money from prelates and other spiritual persons, so that he mi ght redeem his lands by paying the 50,000 pounds which his fathe r's inability to pay had caused the lands to be forfeit to Thoma s, earl of Lancaster. Thomas's uncle, King Edward I, was able t o thwart Sir John's plan and he never did regain his father's es tates. He was in Scotland on the King's service in 1298 and1303 , and in 1306 he was constable of the army of Scotland. On Janu ary 24, 1311/12, he was appointed seneschal of Gascony, at a yea rly salary of 2000 livres tournais. He died in Gascony, it wa s said of poison.
