He had interests in Ufford, Suffolk, by 1255 or 1256. He was i n Wales with Edward, the King’s son, October, 1257, and was wit h him at Boulogne-sur-Mer in January 1263/64. When charged by the Kin g with stirring up dissensions among the Irish, he is said to ha ve replied that “to save the King’s coffers, and to keep the pea ce, he thought it expedient to wink at one knave cutting off ano ther. ‘Whereat the King smiled, and bade him return to Ireland’ .”
